Tour Description

    CITY TOUR/SEAPORT VILLAGE

    Tuesday, May 6

Begin the day in Coronado, a small "island" town in San Diego Bay, approximately 7.4 square miles in size, connected to the City of San Diego by the Sa Diego-Coronado Bridge and to the City of Imperial Beach to the south by State Highway 75. The town is the neighbor of Naval Base Coronado which includes Naval Air Station North Island, home port for two aircraft carriers and the Naval Amphibious Base where the elite SEALS are trained. One of the most famous attractions is "The Del", officially named the Hotel Del Coronado, considered one of America's most beautiful beach resorts. Built in 1888 and designated as a National Historic Landmark in 1977. The Del offers a quintessential San Diego resort vacation experience. From here you will travel back downtown driving through Old Town, the birthplace of California. Continuing on, you will enjoy seeing the Embarcadero, home of the Maritime Museum featuring the "Star of India," oldest iron-hull merchant ship still afloat and the USS MIDWAY, the largest aircraft museum in the United States. Seaport Village is where you will stop for lunch. Here you will find 50 ships for your shopping pleasure and four restaurants or nibble, snack or chow down at more than a dozen smaller eateries featuring burgers, pizza, ice cream, cookies, popcorn. After lunch, you will tour historic downtown San Diego, now known as the Gaslamp Quarter. Then on to see Balboa Park, one of the most beautiful and diversified parks in the United States. It is home to 15 museums, the world's largest outdoor organ pavilion, the Old Globe Theatre complex and Veterans Memorial Center, former home of the old Naval Hospital. Most of the architecture in the Park is of Spanish-Moorish origin, and the California Tower, a city landmark, chimes every quarter hour from this beautiful park.

The Dawn of Powered Flight exhibit takes you to the sands of Kitty Hawk, North Carolina, where you are introduced to the first successful attempt at controlled, powered flight. You'll see meticulously restored aircraft from WWI to the present in this wonderful museum. Afterward departing the Museum you'll continue on to Old Town, which has flourished since its purchase by the State of California in 1969. This historic area was the site of the first European settlement in California. In addition to historic buildings, the park also contains specialty shops and restaurants, with Mexican cuisine the favorite.
