The Secretary of the Navy takes pleasure in presenting the
MERITORIOUS UNIT COMMENDATION
USS HANCOCK (CVA-19)
ATTACK CARRIER AIR WING TWENTY-ONE (CVW-21)
for service as set forth in the following
For exceptional service from 6 December 1965 to 25 July 1966 while participating in combat operations in Southeast Asia in support of the Republic of Vietnam's efforts to resist communist aggression. During this period of intensive combat operations, HANCOCK aircraft flew over 11,000 combat sorties and delivered over 7,000 tons of ornance against enemy forces, repeatedly overcoming the most adverse weather conditions and intense enemy opposition to destroy major portions of North Vietnamese logistic lines of communication being utilized to support Vietcong forces within the Republic of Vietnam. The outstanding record achieved by HANCOCK strike aircraft includes the damaging or destruction of over 120 highway or railroad bridges, 5,500 other structures, 750 water craft, and 330 vehicles in strikes against North Vietnam and in strikes supporting U. S. Marine amphibious operations in South Vietnam. The courage, professional competence, and devotion to duty displayed by the officers and men of the USS HANCOCK and embarked Attack Carrier Air Wing TWENTY-ONE were in the keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
All personnel attached to the USS HANCOCK, or to her embarked air wing, and serving on board this vessel during the period designated above, or any part thereof, are hereby authorized to wear the Navy Unit Commendation Ribbon.
