THE SECRETARY OF THE NAVY
WASHINGTON, D.C.. 20350

The Secretary of the Navy takes pleasure in presenting the NAVY UNIT COMMENDATION to

USS HANCOCK (CVA-19)
and
ATTACK CARRIER AIRWING TWENTY-ONE (CVW-21)

for service as set forth in the following:

CITATION:

For exceptionally meritorious service from 8 February 1972 to 14 September 1972 while engaged in combat operations in Southeast Asia. As a unit of Task Force SEVENTY-SEVEN, USS HANCOCK and her embarked Attack Carrier Air Wing TWENTY-ONE carried out a continuous series of devastating air strikes against the enemy during this period, accounting for numerous enemy personnel casualties and inflicting extensive damage or destruction upon logistic stockpiles and military transporta-tion systems. These decisive attacks not only contributed in large measure toward thwarting a North Vietnamese invasion of the Republic of Vietnam but also crippled the enemy capability to resupply invading forces and to provide reinforcement troops. The outstanding courage, versatility, resourcefulness and aggressive fighting spirit ,displayed by the members of the HANCOCK/CVW-21 combat team, reflected great credit upon themselves, their ship and the United States Naval Service.
