The Secretary of the Navy takes pleasure in presenting the MERITORIOUS UNIT COMMENDATION to

USS HANCOCK (CVA-19)
and
ATTACK CARRIER AIR WING TWENTY-ONE (CVW-21)


for service as set forth in the following

CITATION:

For meritorious service from 20 November 1970 to 7 May 1971 while participating in combat operations in Southeast Asia in support of United States national policy. While operating as a part of Attack Carrier Striking Force SEVENTH Fleet, USS HANCOCK and embarked Attack Carrier Air Wing TWENTY-ONE inflicted extensive damage upon enemy supply lines, seri-ously impeding the flow of men and material down the Ho Chi Minh Trail. HANCOCK arrived in Tonkin Gulf on 20 November 1970 and participated in the diversionary action of the Son Tay Prisoner of War Operation as well as in Operation Freedom Bait. In addition, the aircrews and deck crews displayed a high degree of technical proficiency, dedication, and individual resourcefulness while directly supporting Republic of Vietnam forces in the Lam Son 719 Campaign during 32 consecutive days on YANKEE Station. By their professionalism and esprit de corps, the officers and men of USS HANCOCK and her embarked air wing reflected great credit upon themselves and upheld the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
